by Dr Emma Amoafo
Emma Amoafo is a junior doctor working in London, who founded Friday Born Designs in 2012.
In 2011 she was introduced to Bless the Children International Home, an orphanage in Ghana, West Africa. At the beginning of 2012 she had the idea of making and selling bow ties so that she could donate some money to the orphanage that coming summer. At the time, Emma was a medical student and saw this as a hobby, a way of giving back to her parents' country.
She continued to make bow ties in her bedroom and travelled to Ghana once a year, using the profits from sales to fund a donation to the orphanage.
Dr Emma initially had no plans of starting a fashion brand, but has grown Friday Born Designs into a London based yet African inspired fashion label, using African fabrics disguised in a British silhouette. Every penny of profit is taken to Ghana by Dr Emma to fund various projects that aim to enrich the lives of those whose circumstances don't allow them to reach their full potential.
Achievements so far include:
- providing a clean water supply to a village of 1000 people
- providing a clean water supply to Bless the Children Orphanage
- setting up a fully equipped IT centre for Bless the Children Orphanage and surrounding schools
- regular donations of food and personal care items to orphanages and schools
2017 also saw the birth of Friday Born Designs Health Screening Days. Here, Dr Emma and her team of Ghanaian doctors travel to rural areas to conduct screening for common diseases, provide health education and medical attention to those who have neglected their health for lack of finance. Over 300 people have benefited from the Health Screening Days.
